Award-Winning Actress Valarie Pettiford Talks About Joing True Blood

Recently I got to speak with award-winning actress Valarie Pettiford who has been cast as a regular character in True Blood. Valarie was kind enough to tell us what she could about her career, life, and her secret new character.

What inspired you to choose a career in film/TV; do you have any advice for people who are looking to get into the television and or film industry?

It was a natural progression for me – a transition from theatre. My advice is always to study and know your craft – to always strive to keep growing.

Looking at “True Blood ”, what can you tell us about your character and how you got the part?

I wish I could tell you more about my character, but cannot due to a confidentiality clause. As for how I got the part; I auditioned for it with other amazing actresses.

How much knowledge did you have of the series prior to being cast and did you do any special prep for the part?

I knew about show, but hadn’t really watched it. Once I got the role, I watched all of season 5 – took me a day and a half. I totally fell in love with the show.

I always do some sort of prep for all my work.

What are your thoughts about being part of such a pop culture event as True Blood and do you have any added pressure knowing how rabid the fan base is?

I am so honored to be on this show! It was an awesome experience. And yes, I do hope the fans like me! I know how ardent fans of a show can be, and I don’t want to disappoint their loyal viewers.

When you consider a script or a potential TV or film project, what elements do you look for in the story and character and what types of projects would you like to do in the future?

I look for a visceral reaction to the story and my character, then other factors that play a part in my decision making are who the director might be, which cast members I am working with, and whether or not I find a challenge in the work. I would love to do a big blockbuster action flick – and there are so many TV shows I would love to guest star on: House of cards, House of Lies, Scandal, Game of Thrones…and the list goes on!

What were some memorable moments from filming and what can we look forward to from you and your character going forward? As a follow up, what was working with your cast like?

Everything about True Blood was memorable. They have one of the best cast and crew I’ve ever worked with.

When you’re not filming, what do you like to do and which shows and movies are you looking forward to seeing?

I love hanging with family and friends. I also like to watch shows like Being MaryJane, Modern Family, and The Deadliest Catch. I can’t wait to see what the new season will bring.

If you had carte blanche, what type of role would you like to create for yourself, who would direct, and who would star with you in the project?

For me – a strong, smart , sexy women who can kick butt but has a heart of gold and saves the world. Directed by JJ Abrams and starring Morgan Freeman. Is that too specific?

What future projects do you have coming up that the readers can look forward to?

I continue to perform my one women show all over the US throughout the year. Be on the look out for my return to ‘Love That Girl’ in their new season on TV1, and looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

What sort of music do you like?

I love all types of music but what I’m loving right now is ‘Vintage Trouble’ – everyone is starting to catch on to them now, but I’ve been a fan from the beginning. Their new album – The Bomb Shelter Sessions – is amazing!
