Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

by Gabby Colageo

From book to big screen comes New York Times Bestselling author Cassandra
Clare’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The story follows
Clary (Lily Collins) your run of the mill average teen, who is thrown into
the world of Mundanes, Demons, DownWorlders and most of all Shadow Hunters.
In this book to screen adaptation Clary must look for the Mortal Cup, an
object belonging to the Shadow Hunters to save her mother from the Rouge
Shadow Hunter Valentine (Jonathan Rhys Meyers. To aid her in
finding her mother and the cup are her best friend Simon (Robert
Sheehan) and the Mysterious Shadow Hunters Jace (Jamie
Campbell Bower), Alec (Keven Zegers) and Isabelle (Jemima

After Clary’s mother is kidnapped, Clary and her best friend Simon are
taken to the Institute. A refuge for Shadow Hunters. It is there she learns
about the strange symbol that has been plaguing her mind. As her quest
continues she must deal with the feelings she is developing for Jace but
also protect her best friend Simon. As Clary finds out more about who she
is; the closer she is to finding the Mortal Cup. Unfortunately the closer
she gets to the cup she must face the Demons and Downworlders who want it
for themselves as well as Valentine.

With witty banter between main characters and cool fight scenes the acting
in this movie is pretty good. My only concern would be the relationship
between Jace and Clary was a bit speedy but what can you do with a two hour
movie. Now like most book adaptations the movie is not exactly like the
book but it included the main points and kept the main characters in the
story. To the book lovers the movie will still be enjoyable and to the
people who didn’t read the book it will be a neat fantasy-action movie with
a little romance thrown in.

I would definitely recommend The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones to
anyone who is interested in teen fantasy-action movies. While the movie is
directed to its teen/young adult following of the book, adults might like
it as well if they are into that genre of film. It also has a pretty neat
soundtrack that fit the movie really well. I wouldn’t however recommend it
for small children though due to the various SGI monsters that pop up

3.5 out of 5 stars
