Speedrunners

Review By Brad Briggs II

This is a tough game to describe in a single line, but the best way possible would be a 2D side scroller mixed with a racing aspect to it. There is a single player portion that you can play with some story to it that is fun; mostly I would play the story as a continuation to the training of how to play the game. The tutorial is just a down and dirty introduction to each button being used, but it does its job to get you up and running, literally. The story, Origins, builds up adding various other things you will come across in the multiplayer maps like spikes, laser, and blocks that fall when you stand on them. Levels are scored based on how fast you complete them; this is greatly needed skill when you play the multiplayer aspect to it as speed is key.

In the multiplayer part you race to be the last person on the screen. Whoever is in the lead determines the area of the screen shown, so if you can get through it fast enough you can bring the end of the screen to your opponents and end the race fast. You are able to pick up power up or objects to use against your opponents if speed is not working well for you. There is a grappling hook that will seek and grab a player in front of you, pulling them back and you forward. In addition there are player seeking rockets and blocks you can drop. Should everyone be well matched and the race continues on, the edge of the screen starts to shrink in towards the center decreasing the playable area, but making it easier for a skilled player to trap the opponents into the wall. The overall winner is determined by who gets to three wins on that map, you can go quickly from the leader to last after a couple races and someone finding some better flow to the race path than you can.

There are many skins to choose from and unlock as you play, none have special abilities over another, just something to help you keep track of who you are, which can be tough at times when things really start moving fast. So many good levels to play on as well as the ability to make your own opening up endless ways to play with friends or torment those random online players you match up against. Overall it seems like it would be more of a party game you would play co-op on a couch with friends as you don’t really have the need for split screen.
