What Is Sony’s End Game With Not Giving More News On The PlayStation NEO?

Oh what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive. Sony has been very coy about their upcoming Playstation Neo as aside from teasing it at E3 there have been very few details.
Updated!!! Sony has announced a September 7th conference where hopefully news will be revealed.
Rumors have abounded that it may be out as early as September-November of 2017 which would put it ahead of Microsoft and their Scorpio unit.

However with news that the company is not planning a showcase at Gamescom and with PAX West not being place that announcements are made, many wonder exactly when and what the plan is.
Should the unit launch to time with the October release of the Playstation VR, one would think that Sony would have to release information ahead of time such as specs, pricing, features, and such as expecting consumers to be able to buy a new piece of hardware without time to save and plan is not the wisest thing to do.

Sony has been very shrewd and highly effective with the PS4 as they kept details of the Playstation VR under wraps until we had a reveal of it in action in late 2015 and it was only shortly before they started taking orders for it did pricing and release date news become available.

Sony has a plan in place but it is interesting to see the strategy behind it as it keeps consumers, retailers, and their rival Microsoft guessing.

Consumers have hinted they expect to see it this year but we are now looking at just about 4.5 months left in 2016 and the all-important Holiday Shopping season ahead, the timing for this will be key. Let us also not forget the Nintendo NX is due in March and as mentioned earlier, Scorpio from Microsoft. Whatever the end result, Sony has once again managed to keep the public interested and waiting for more. Here is hoping that the wait is not much longer.

We know their endgame: deal with what is while it is.

When they’re ready to show off something about the Neo, they will.

What more is there? Or is that speculation being passed off as certainty?

They do make you wonder. I remember PS4 keep quite before being revealed when there was rumors it would be a little less powerful than xbox one. Later they announced it and it was more powerful. Microsoft stayed with their hardware. I think their is some hardware sandbagging going on by both Microsoft and Son. Both where targeting 8tb (remember xbox one and Microsoft and PS4 was cutting edge at the time. Sony AND Microsoft KNEW what AMD and NVidia parts where coming out they where trying to sell it to them after all. Same this time around if you ask me.

I think you may have nailed it. We heard news like most people did of final specs not being set. Almost like they are waiting for Microsoft to set their final specs so they can top it.

Sony is potentially deceiving people with NEO? What? They announced a press event for September 7…which you can bet money is a NEO showcase event.

  3. Why does this article ignore the fact that Sony have already announced that they will be showcasing the Neo on 7th September? Is the author living under a rock or something?

Gamescom and PAX all days before yet Sony ignores this opportunity where over 100 thousand press and fans assemble. Hence what is the end game ignoring major cons and giving consumers a rumored very small window.

      • But your headline contradicts reality. It doesn’t matter whether the event they use to announce Neo is big or small, it only matters that they will announce it and give us information about it. Which they will. On September 7th. That’s not a rumour; that’s an objective, indisputable fact.

Are you 100% certain they will reveal all at the event? I am not.

          August 12, 2016
          • No one can be 100% certain of that. I don’t see why they wouldn’t, though. There are enough clues that Neo is likely to be launching very soon (i.e. within 2016), in which case this is there only chance to reveal everything about it.

And if it turns out to be 2017, there won’t be any rush to reveal everything right now.

Either way, Sony doesn’t really have anything to worry about. I expect NX will be another Wii U in terms of sales that Sony can safely ignore (and I say that as a Wii U owner), and Scorpio is still more than a year away.

As of late that’s Sony’s MO. They wait for MS to make the first move. I think MS pulled a bait and switch with the Scorpio on Sony. When MS showed off Scorpio specs they knew Sony was gonna go back to the drawing board to outdo them.

    August 12, 2016
    • You give Microsoft too much credit. It’s not a bait and switch; it’s just Microsoft doing what they always do, and promising more than they can deliver. Just look at what they promised with the original Kinect, and then again last year with their Minecraft Hololens demo that’s never going to happen in any way that remotely resembles what they shown.

I It almost seems like their entire plan is to react to what Sony does or announces but not being able to follow through on it.

        August 12, 2016
        • I don’t think Microsoft reacts to Sony so much as they react to the current market leader. Just look at the direction they went during the Wii craze with avatars and Kinect when Nintendo were in the lead.

It’s just that Sony has happened to be in the lead for most of the last two decades (PS3 is the exception, but even then, Sony did a pretty decent job of turning things around by the end).

I think that is fair. Point is for a company that was the undisputed leader in PC software for OS and productivity for ages it seems odd that the Xbox seems to be so reactionary.
