Evil Eye

The third of four initial Blumhouse Horror presentations for Amazon Prime has arrived with “Evil Eye”. The film stars Sunita Mani as Pallavi; an Indian woman living in New Orleans and coming up on her 29th birthday and unmarried much to the chagrin of her mother Usha (Sarita Choudhury).

Since Pallavi opted not to go home to India when her parents relocated; she reluctantly agrees to meet a potential suitor visiting from Houston to get her mother to stop pestering her about finding a husband.

When her coffee meeting runs late due to traffic, Pallavi is approached by a suave Indian gentleman named Sandeep (Omar Maskati). The two begin to date and their relationship is moving ahead quickly towards marriage. Sandeep comes from a good family and has wealth and is more than happy to share it with Pallavi by getting her a better place to live and helping her leave her job so she can focus on her writing.

What is an ideal situation on the surface raises concerns for Usha as she begins to look into Sandeep and starts to believe that he is a violent stalker from her past who has been reborn and is using her daughter to get back at her.

As the story unfolds Usha must convince her husband and her daughter of the danger even when they are convinced she is going crazy.

The film does not have any scares or sustained intensity but it does have some good characters and a nice look into the Indian culture and family structure. The roles are cast and played very well. While I saw the ending coming from a mile away; the film does entertain and offers something different from the usual horror offerings.
