Tempest Rising Is A Must For RTS Fans

I have always been a fan of Real Time Strategy (RTS) games from back when 386 and 486 CPUs were the norm. Command and Conquer, Red Alert, Warcraft, and Starcraft were what drew me away from a constant rotation of FPS games.

Naturally many other games in the genre followed but around the time that Command and Conquer Generals did not meet expectations, there has been a real shortage of games that captured the magic of the early releases.

Tempest Rising has not only captured the early magic but has updated it to be a challenging modern entry that is so much more than a nostalgic homage to the classic Command and Conquer series.

The game offers three functions and while one is only available in single-player mode, having campaigns for the main factions complete with cutscenes brings a welcome mix of old and new.

Gameplay is based around building a base, military forces, harvesting resources, and researching new technologies and players can also play multiplayer with and against other players and the A.I.

While the gameplay was easy to adapt to, I had to adjust my tactics as building up a base with numerous defensive emplacements was no match for the massive, armored waves the enemies threw at me online.

Fortunately for me the main campaigns while challenging were not as brutal as seeing your massive walls of defenses and tank backups shredded while you sent planes on a bombing run can really be devastating.

The graphics and sound in the game are great and the variety of units made for some real fun. I had hoped for a Mega Weapon as I was always a fan of dropping in the Nukes in Starcraft and Empire Earth but that has so far eluded me as I have had to make do with more structured plan versus building up forces to overwhelm an enemy bases after they depleted their offense charging into my myriad of base defenses.

From start to finish the game engaged me and kept me hooked even when the challenge was more than expected and occasionally frustrating.

Tempest Rising is a must-own for fans of Command and Conquer and RTS games and I cannot wait to see what they do next.
