The latest Brad Pitt film has arrived and “F1® The Movie” is not only one of the best films about racing ever released; but possibly one of the best sports themed films ever.
Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a gifted driver who following a crash has devolved into a series of failed relationships and career as a professional gambler.
Hayes lives in a van and picks up races now and then for money after a ten year racing hiatus.
His fill-in win at Daytona brings an old competitor named Ruben (Javier Bardem) around with an offer to drive for his team for the final nine races.
Ruben claims he is in danger of losing his team and finances as they have yet to earn a single point much less a top finish and he is down to only his rookie driver JP (Damsom Idris).
Hayes picks up the challenge but he and JP clash as Sonny rejects his Social Media powered focus and attitude while JP has issues with Hayes regarding his age ans very aggressive style of driving that many see aa dangerous and selfish.
As the season unfolds; conflicts and challenges arise as both drivers must overcome their demons to work as a team.
What makes the film shine is not only the incredible racing footage and visuals that give audiences an idea of the danger and thrills of racing at 200 MPH but the fantastic soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and great sound effects.
The cast is exceptionally strong and I would not be shocked to hear of possible Oscar nomination for aspects of the film.
The film also keeps you guessing as the outcome of the final race kept us in suspense until the very end.
From start to finish I was hooked even though I am not a big racing fan.
The movie is exactly what a summer film should be as it was exciting character driven thrills that did not rely on an array of FX to carry the day and was one of the best films of the year.
