Director Danny Boyle has returned to usher in the planned new trilogy in the “28 Days Later” franchise.
In “28 Years Later” the audience learns that the Rage infection which spread to Europe at the end of “28 Months Later” has been pushed back to the U.K. and as a result. The nation is quarantined with the naval forces of the world enforcing a blockade.
Those who have survived the infection must exist without any hope of help, rescue, or assistance from the outside world. The story focuses on a small community isolated by a causeway that is only available during low tide in the Highlands of Scotland.
Spike (Alfie Williams), and his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) go out into the mainland to scout and teach Spike the needed rules for survival as this is his first venture out amongst the infected.
Spike’s mother Isla (Jodie Comer) is ill and with no Doctors available; spends her days in bed with fleeting moments of clarity which is of great concern for Spike.
Encounters with the infected are tense but Spike and Jamie are able to return allowing spike to know of the source of a fire he spotted in the distance which belongs to a Doctor named Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), who has become an isolated taboo due to being spotted conducting a mass pyre years ago.
Spike decides to flee with his mother in the hope for finding her treatment and along the way discoverers that the world he knew is not the world of reality and that dangers exist everywhere especially for an individual who grew up after the fall of society.
The movie is very slowly paced and reports that the majority of the film were shot with cellular phones gives the movie an almost student film vibe at times versus a studio production with a reported $60 million budget.
There were segments of what appeared to be stock footage of newsreels and old clips interspersed with static chatter and thrashing music which one could take as being an illustration of what was and will be combined with the rage of the infected.
The film remains a character study of survival when the protective norms of society are lost and as such should appeal to fans of the series despite being the first in a planned new trilogy of films, as the ending is wide open for the next installment,t which is reportedly already filming.
While it lacks the polish of many modern horror films; the stripped down nature reflects the world in which the movie is set and as such; should appeal to fans of the series.
