Summer has fully arrived at cinemas with the debut of “Jurassic World: Rebirth”. The film is the fourth in the “World” series and seventh adaptation based on the books by Michael Crichton.
It is revealed that the Dinosaur phenomenon has waned as people no longer have much interest in the creatures and that due to climate issues are dying out save for a group near the equator.
The climate and conditions in the equator zone are ideal for the survivors and they have thrived due to the region being declared illegal to enter.
Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), enlists the services of Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) to travel to the Dinosaur zone and extract samples from three large creatures to allow his company to create a heart vaccine worth trillions.
Faced with millions of dollars in compensation and a chance to leave her life behind following a tragic outcome on her last assignment; Zora enlists the help of an old colleague named Duncan (Mahershala Ali), and his crew to travel to the island for their mission.
A chance encounter with a capsized family caught sailing by the creatures forms the cast and before long the group finds themselves on the island with dangers all around d them.
Anyone who has seen any of the prior films knows what to expect and the film gives viewers lots of eye candy and a few tense moments that are worthy of the best moments of the series.
The cast is strong but the characters are not devoted much. There is an attempt to broaden them by shared personal tragedies but they are never expanded upon.
Naturally the draw of the series are the creatures and there is a great mix of old and new and a new take on one of my favorite scenes from the original book.
While some may want more depth; Director Gareth Edwards knows what fans wants and delivers summer thrills and an effective continuation of the franchise.
3.5 stars out of 5
The movie opens on July 2nd in time for the long weekend.
