Twenty-two years after Disney updated the classic “Freaky Friday”, the story continues with “Freakier Friday,” which takes what made the original film a hit and expands upon it.
The sequel finds Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) living life as a single mother to Harper (Julia Butters).
Tess Coleman (Jamie Lee Curtis) is living a good life with her successful therapy career and loves being the doting grandmother to Harper and advising her daughter frequently.
Anna has left her time in the band Pink Slip to manage music talent as a result of motherhood, but does her best to navigate her career and her 9th-grade daughter and her teenage rebellion attitude, which has caused her to be in trouble at school due to a conflict with a student from England named
Sophia (Lily Reyes).
The latest batch of trouble between Harper and Sophia results in Anna meeting Eric (Manny Jacinto), who soon starts dating Anna, much to the chagrin of her daughter and Lilly, who wants nothing more than to return to England.
When an engagement is revealed in time, stress arises as Harper worries that she will move to England, and Sophia worries that she will have to stay in Los Angeles versus heading back home.
As the conflicts arise, the girls find themselves with a quirky mystic who, in-between her many jobs and ventures, triggers things so that a four-way swap of bodies occurs. Sophia finds herself swapping with Tess, and Anna finds herself in Harper.
With the wedding only a couple of days away, all kinds of problems await, ranging from interviews, school, the wedding, and more, which the foursome try to navigate while pursuing their own agendas.
The movie offered a fresh take on the body-switching premise, and I liked the angle of Anna being a single mother. Curtis is an absolute blast, and Jacinto is a fresh addition to the cast as are Reyes and Butters.
Lohan does a very energetic performance,e and the chemistry and timing between the cast is great as they took what could have come across as a simple rehash of the original and made it fresh and entertaining.
While it does not break away from the expected formula of such films, the cast makes it an enjoyable piece of summer film fun and one that fans of the series and family comedy will likely enjoy.
