The latest entry in the open-world Mafia game series has arrived with Mafia: The Old World. The game tells the story of Enzo who is a downtrodden and exploited miner who, following a tragedy, flees his brutal supervisors and ends up being taken in by the Torrisi family and doing various odd jobs for them. Enzo catches the eye of the Don’s daughter Isabella but is warned to stay away from her as her father is very protective.
In time, Enzo earns a place into the family and must do all kinds of tasks from collection to retribution and other criminal activities. This is done via a mix of stealth and combat missions and players will become skilled with knives and firearms which can be upgraded and exchanged during missions and at various points using Dinari gained during missions.
Players will also be able to find and equip various charms to give them a boost along the way, such as dampened footsteps and extra durability.
The map of the game is vast and stunningly detailed, and being able to walk, drive, or ride horses through the highly detailed scenery alone is worth the price of the game. The game offers plenty of length and is not one that will be finished quickly, as I spent several days with it.
There are various races that have to be won along the way, as well as stealth missions, which at times became frustratingly annoying for someone like myself who wanted to be right in the action but they did help establish the early 1900s setting of the game and the characters who are in it. Speaking of the characters, there are some very developed storylines in the game and in a world of changing and divided loyalties and motivations; the actions and their consequences made for a compelling gameplay experience.
While the combat mechanics at times seemed a bit dated and clunky, the final product gets more than enough right to be a very worthy entry in the series and one well worth your time if you are a fan of the series and this type of gameplay.
