The latest Call of Duty game has arrived with the release of Black Ops 7. The game arrives with a wave of anticipation and some changes that have been decisive online for some fans.
The campaign mode is based around co-op play as teams of four can take on the various story missions..I played once solo, but was able to be matched with players easily as I completed the campaign.
Being able to use a Wing Suit and Rapple line made things really interesting as I could ascend to a roof and then sail in behind enemies and catch them in a crossfire.
The array of weapons and explosives is varied and impressive, and can be swapped or upgraded at various locales along the way.
Players can also get special abilities ranging from advanced weapons and tactical items such as cloaks, shields, and healing options.
There is currently no way to pause a mission, and downed players can be revived by their team or via a self-revive.
Should a team be downed, they will revert to a checkpoint to resume.
The campaign does involve elements of technology and the supernatural via hallucinations and may not be as appealing as players would like. Once, I did find some of the levels to be engaging and the combat on par with what was expected.
The online mode features numerous maps and mixes old and new to give players plenty of options. The customizations are in keeping with what players should be used to from the series.
My biggest issue was balance, as players would at times take full clips at point-blank range and stay up. I remember a scenario where two of us unloaded on an enemy who absorbed it, reloaded while being shot, and one-shot killed my player. Replays showed an abundance of hits so it was frustrating. A quick check of various forums has shown this to be a frequent complaint.
I attempted to remedy this by using fallen weapons until I was able to reach a level to customize a loadout that worked for me.
My last round went better due to a weapon higher on the depth chart with some attachments.
The lack of Skill-Based Match Making has been a loud complaint as players have not enjoyed being matched with players of a significantly higher level and loadout.
The Zombie mode has been great fun, and I love taking the wheel of the truck and mowing down Zombies before blasting them to oblivion.
The game and campaign are not nearly the mess that some would have you believe. It attempts to walk the line between old and new, and like Infinite and Advanced Warfare, some of the changes have not resonated with aspects of the community.
Knowing that the game will have six seasons and mid-season updates with new maps, cosmetics, and play modes, to say nothing of numerous patches, the game will provide enough good moments to keep gamers playing even if they dislike the campaign.
