Blood: Refreshed Supply Brings New Life To An Old Classic

Back in 1997, a game called BLOOD was released looking to find a place in the wave of First Person Shooters that exploded onto the marketplace following the success of DOOM and DOOM 2.

The game featured an undead character named Caleb who rises again to battle a demon named Tchernobog and his legions of troops.

The game featured Pop Culture references, clever map design, multiplayer, and an array of weapons to create some grizzly carnage.  This was a game from the Dial-Up-Modem days and before 3D graphic cards where the ability to connect via phone and play with or against friends and players was an amazing and still fairly new way to play games for many.

Taking what was old and making it new sees the release of Blood: Refreshed Supply which brings some enhancements to the game along with the DLC and user made maps. The smoother function on modern systems as well as the porting to consoles to follow.

The game plays as it did back in the day as the graphics still have that pixelated quality which was the norm and at times requires close inspection of walls in order to find switches as they were not as clearly evident as they are with the modern graphical resolutions today.

I recently enjoyed a nice co-op match with a player where we went through several levels of the game, and I noted how the whimsy such as interacting with elements of an evil carnival were still fun and I remembered how innovative they were for the time.

Being able to light up an enemy with a flare and then kick the head off a wall were new ideas at the time, Using dynamite to blast enemies and areas of a map in order to find a new path before letting fly with your arsenal paved the way for what gamers now take for granted and expect in their games.

While it would be great to see a new game or one where all the modern bells and whistles were employed to the franchise; this is a great trip down memory lane which still provides abundant gameplay fun for those looking to remember how gaming used to be.
