Wonder Man Is The Best Marvel Series To Date

The latest Marvel series is coming to Disney+, and it marks a departure from the traditional formula of prior Marvel offerings on the service.

Simon Williams (Yaha Abdul-Mateen) is a gifted actor who is waiting for his breakthrough. His recent job ended due to his over analysis of the character as he suggested numerous changes to a scene which resulted in his character being written out of the show.

Simon has also lost his girlfriend and has a loving mother and a brother who thinks he is a joke that needs to get with the program and get a real career.

A chance meeting with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), who informs him of a pending audition for an upgraded version of the “Wonder Man” movie. Since the movie had a huge impact on Simon as a child, he becomes driven to get an audition and manages to work his way into the mix and get an audition.

Since Trevor is up for a supporting role in the film, the two bond and discuss all aspects of their lives and career. Trevor, however, has a secret as he is being forced to spy on Simon by an agency who is convinced that he is dangerous and has powers of significant ability that he is hiding. Eager to not have to face the remaining jail time from his stint as The Mandarin, Trevor goes along with the plan but becomes conflicted.

What follows is an engaging character driven series that over eight episodes gives audiences a look behind the curtain at the movie process and some very enjoyable cameos as well.

What makes this series stand out is that the usual FX driven battles and action sequence do not really apply to this. There are a few moments of action, but they are very limited and short as the focus is on the characters and their stories. While the final does set up an interesting future for the characters that I hope audiences will get to see, the series for me has been the most enjoyable Marvel series to date on Disney+ and one that I hope fans will embrace when it arrives on January 27th.
