When Los Angeles is hit with a series of high-end robberies, Detective Lou (Mark Ruffalo) looks to find the individual behind the crimes convinced they all happen along the 101 freeway. He bosses do not agree with his theories and want a cleaner and more optically friendly approach which causes them to deny his theories and pressure him to say they are isolated incidents.
Davis (Chris Hemsworth) is the man behind the robberies. He has a strict non-violence policy and carefully selects targets knowing that their insurance will cover the losses. Davis is looking to reach a certain financial figure from his cut so he can retire from the lifestyle.
Add into the mix an insurance adjustor named Sharon (Halle Berry), an unstable thief (Barry Keoghan), whose destinies will all combine and the table is set.
There is also a very nice story of a relationship between Davis and Maya (Monica Barbaro), who meet by accident and force Davis to step out of his shell and take a new look at his life which added to the characters and their motivation.
While the ending may have been a bit too tidy for me after a long buildup that took pains to establish the characters and their motivations and flaws, “Crime 101” kept my attention as I was engaged by the Los Angeles settings and how the characters kept going on despite their personal flaws and hardships they encountered.
While it may be a bit slow and long for some, if you like a character driven drama then this may be exactly what you are looking for.
