The latest Shark movie has arrived, and “Chum” is more than it appears at first glance. Alice Eve stars as a newlywed who is on the outs with her husband due to career choices and paths, yet she decides to go ahead with their destination wedding and have it annulled later.
Their friends, who are unaware of the situation, take them on a scenic day cruise the next morning, not knowing that there is a Great White in the area. The guests have been told that there have not been any sharks in the area and are content to swim and enjoy the day despite the obvious issues between the newlyweds.
When tragedy strikes, and the guests are forced to take refuge on a passing boat, they are content to take the scenic route back to avoid the weather. It soon becomes clear that something is not right as they have been drugged by their supposed savior, and he has bound them so he can lower them one at a time into a Shark Cage as he attempts to hunt the Great White. Much like Captain Ahab, the Captain has a personal score to settle with the shark, and this leads to a deadly game where the Captain and the Shark both take turns menacing the guests.
While elements reminded me of “Dangerous Animals”, the film has some graphic Shark scenes where audiences are shown victims being chewed into pieces, versus the usual bite, blood, or missing parts. The visuals are better than expected for a film of this type, and while the scenarious and late stages of the film stretch credibility at times, it still delivers what fans of Shark movies should expect.
