During our Upcoming Video Games To Be Excited For Panel at SDCC, we were sent several questions via the poll QR code. We did not have time to get to all of them, but I told the audience that I would answer them all after the convention.
Any remakes you’re excited about?
I am curious about Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Giving them a new look and tweak may give us an idea what the next Fallout game will offer. I am also hoping we will see the long-gestating Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic soon.
How does one make a trailer look good without spoiling the game?
This is a great question. I think, like with movies, you should give people and fair and honest look at what is to come but keep spoilers out of it. Do not make the trailer all about cutscenes and animation. Show some gameplay, such as the start of a mission or the middle part, but avoid spoilers.
What’s your most anticipated upcoming indie game?
I think ILL is very interesting. It is an FPS game with a Horror theme, and it has a very dark and dangerous look to it. It is an Indie but has the look of a big studio game.
Half Life 3 when?
We keep hearing that Valve is working on a new game. We heard that there was a playable build released to staff and their families as a proof of concept and stability check. They move at their own pace. I still keep hoping that Alyx will get a PSVR 2 release. They will move at their own pace, but this announcement could dwarf that of GTA VI.
How do you feel about the future of Xbox Game Studios?
I think big changes are needed. The hardware is in third place and does not sell well overseas compared to their rivals. Many of their announced games did not make it to market or failed to find an audience. They need to decide if they are in the publishing business, developer business, or hardware business, as clearly they have been lacking in all three. Focus on quality games and stop this trend of only on XBOX. Windows was their main platform, and they need to remember what powered Microsoft. They also need to stop leaning so much on Game Pass.
What’s your take on the remake/remaster trend? Should they remain “graphical updates,” or go the FF7 Remake route, and make sweeping changes to the story?
If they can add something of benefit, then I am for it. Sadly, many are simply the same game, graphically just tweaked to run on modern systems. If the graphics, gameplay, and multiplayer are enhanced, I am all for it. If it is just for financial reasons and does not improve on the original release, then why bother?
Current GOTY?
GTA VI will likely be in the mix, but I am curious what is to come as there are some strong games ahead.
What’s your position regarding Sony’s latest announcement of going full digital, totally eliminating the ownership sense of videogames?
This has been the trend we have seen coming. I do not like it, as while most of my games are digital due to how review material is sent, I like the idea of owning a disc as I do for some of my games. The PS5 makes you physically change discs to play, which is something digital does not, but the fact is that anyone who buys a game should own it and be able to play whenever they want, even if it is a decade later, as that is ownership.
What are your guys’ favorite games?
I am big on FPS games, so the Id games, Half-Life, and Call of Duty Games. I also enjoy PREY, Borderlands, and back in the day I loved the Crusader games, Red Alert, Command and Conquer, Starcraft, Warcraft, and Alien: Isolation. There are several, but those are some of my favorites. I also used to love the Sierra adventure games like Space Quest, Police Quest, King’s Quest, and the Infocom games.
Do you see a potential increase in Warhammer games once Amazon releases the Warhammer series/movie being done by Henry Cavil?
I think there is a good chance. For me, I get a bit confused with the continuity as the games have spawned multiple genres and eras. But there have been some great releases in the past few years, and I think this is only going to help if the production is good.
What are the odds of a remake of older indie pc games happening? (Ex. Realms of the Haunting)
If the demand is there and money is to be made, it can happen. It comes down many times to the rights holder deciding between investing in a remake or creating something new, and which makes the most financial sense.
Do you see a continued trend of increasingly large open world games?
I think so. The main reason is that it allows for extended gameplay times and allows developers, in some cases, to avoid multiplayer and save development costs. If players have to wander 40-60 hours to complete a game and there are side quests and new content added, then developers can tout the value of the game compared to a 6-10 hour campaign and multiplayer.
Thank you all for such great questions, and we hope that you liked the panel.
