Their lives change when after a series of bizarre incidents in their neighborhood, they find that their community has been whisked into the past and that deadly prehistoric creatures now roam and prey upon everyone they encounter.
Unable to escape as every area is filled with impassable forest, swamp, and creatures, the family struggles to hold only reality and one another as a lack of supplies, options, and answers makes their already fragile dynamic even more tense.
The movie does a great job setting up the look of the era and was very much like a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The initial tension of their situation was also well-established and engaging up until the reveal of the creatures and the danger they represent.
At this point the direction the film wanted to take became a bit unclear. Horror, action, mystery, or family drama were all explored but none to the extent that it should have reached. The cast was solid and the action sequences really worked well to show the peril the characters encountered. The ending seemed a bit rushed to be and overly tidy as answers and solutions took a very safe and easy path versus answering some of the more difficult questions raised.
Writer/Director David Robert Mitchell showed that his amazing “It Follows” was not a fluke and knows how to give audiences tension filled moments and while
the film does provide a fun bit of late-summer entertainment and is worth seeing but could have been a true classic versus just good entertainment.
