Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You Is An Enjoyable Tale Of Love, Loss, And Life”

While I am avid reader; my wife is constantly reading and so it came as no surprise that she was eager to screen “Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You” with me as she had read the book.

I went in not knowing much about the story; yet found the movie to be an engaging and enjoyable tale of love, betrayal, loss, life, and more.

The movie stars Allison Williams as Morgan Grant who has raised her daughter Clara (McKenna Grace) with her husband Chris (Scott Eastwood), for 17 years after learning that she was pregnant shortly after High School graduation.

Her sister Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald), has had a child with their friend Jonah (Dave Franco), who has held a crush on Morgan since their school years.  When a tragic incident reveals a shocking betrayal, Morgan, Clara, and Jonah are forced to come face to face with the truth as well as unresolved issues which have festered for years.

Clara is eager to move on to college to study acting and her romance with Miller (Mason Thames) is both sweet and complicated as life is at that age. As time passes and the evolving situation grows; the truth threatens to come out and the strain on their complicated relationships and dynamics grows.

I was taken in by the story and found the characters engaging and flawed; which helped make them more relatable. I am told that the film had a lighter tone than the book as there were some funny moments that had the audience laughing along amidst some of the more heavy issues of the story.

I found that the third act became a bit sappy and drawn-out for my taste and started to fall on many of the staples of the genre. The movie does rebound well and have a solid final act even if it to me seemed directly out of a school girl diary fantasy.

The solid performances and engaging story carry the film and make it something that fans of the book and genre should enjoy and one that seemed to delight the audience at our screening.
