Malcom in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair Is A Nostalgic And Fun Return

Malcom (Frankie Muniz) is a happy and successful single father who touts a large part of his success to avoiding his dysfunctional family as much as possible.  When Hal (Bryan Cranston), and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), plan a landmark anniversary party, Lois is not willing to accept Malcom’s unwillingness to commit to attending their big event.

With his brothers and sister in play, Malcom’s worlds collide when it is learned that he has been keeping secrets from his family, as well as his daughter and girlfriend that send his life into chaos.

What really stood out for me was not only the return of so many supporting characters as well as the leads save for Erik Per Sullivan who declined to return to acting; but the easy way the character dynamics still fit even as they evolved to represent adult versions.

The show was more than a nostalgia trip and the final episode had a moment worthy of the best episodes of the series to date. While it is listed as a mini-series, one has to wonder if the door is being left open as there are several storylines which can be explored should they wish to do so. For now, it is an enjoyable return to form offering laughs and nostalgia for fans of the show.

Check out the series on Hulu.
