Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Lego game announcements and demos at E3 aren’t exactly anything new or groundbreaking typically. Last year I had the opportunity for some hands on with the latest in the Lego DC franchise, Lego DC Super Villains. What I wasn’t expecting however was a LEGO game that would not only bring with it the entire Lego Star Wars family but doing so in a completely new way. Warner Bros and TT Games announced Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga coming in 2020. This is not simply a repackaging of Lego Star Wars Episode one through Star Wars: The Force Awakens and adding on eight and nine, but a complete redo of the entire franchise.

We had the opportunity to sit down and watch the private media reveal an ask questions to the developers. This is by far the biggest Lego game ever released, built from the ground up on an entirely new engine. The game allows you to play through any of the nine movies in any order you wish. If you want to start with Return of the Jedi and then play The Force Awakens, have at it. It’s not only the freedom to choose the movie you want to play however; it also allows you to take a ship and explore various planets and locations from the entire universe. Visit Hoth, Dagobah, Tatooine…and take in the amazing visuals along the way.

Of course, a Lego game would not be complete without a wide assortment of characters to play with, and this game is certain to not disappoint. With several hundred iconic characters, each with their own unique abilities to control, you certainly won’t have an opportunity to be bored for a VERY long time. Utilizing a force sensitive character like Luke for example allows you to interact with practically everything on the map. From tumbleweeds blowing through the desert, to making Bantha’s dance, there is literally nothing stopping you from playing the game you want to play.

In traditional Lego fashion, there will be the mix of quirky humor, family friendly gameplay and the types of visuals we have never seen in a Lego game before. While it won’t be releasing until after the final movie has hit theaters, it’s nice to know that we will finally have the definitive Lego Star Wars collection. There was no mention of Rogue Squadron during the presentation, likely because it’s a Star Wars Story and not directly related to the Skywalker franchise. I certainly wouldn’t mind having it available as a DLC down the road.
