In 2004 a game named Painkiller was released and combined FPS gaming with supernatural elements.
Battling hordes of demonic enemies in Purgatory was an engaging premise; yet the addition of a spinning blade Painkiller weapon and a Stake gun that could impale enemies to the walls were novel features.
The new take on a game does not go the sequel route but focuses on a fresh take.
Players still fight enemies in the underworld with an array of weapons; but the option to play Co-op with other players or Bots is a nice feature.
Players can also opt for solo combat as they have the choice to select level-based raids or take on skirmish style missions.
Players can also earn cards and items to enhance their abilities along the way.
The graphics are sharp and the action is fast and smooth. I upgrades my Stake weapon with an alternate launcher mode to blast enemy mob and bosses into submission.
Players will have to at times solve some puzzles to advance such as filling a barrel with the remains of enemies and so on.
I found the game to be great in doses as there was not a traditional 6 hr plus campaign; rather a jump in and blast away mode which was enjoyable carnage.
The game is an enhancement on the original and lots of fun as long as you accept it for what it is and enjoy the ride.
