“Mortal Kombat” was released in 2021 and brought an R-rated take on the film series that had previously only been done on a wide scale for the animated films.
In 2026 we will see the release of “Street Fighter” and “Mortal Kombat II’ and with recent games in both series being released in the last couple of years, the question regarding which is the bigger cinematic and game franchise will be raised.
Mortal Kombat was a powerhouse when it arrived as it gave brutal fatalities and moves with motion-capture to provide a controversial game that was so raw Nintendo had to tone it down for the subsequent console release. The fanbase pressure ultimately caused Nintendo to include the more violent gameplay in subsequent games in the series.
Street Fighter employed a less graphic but more inclusive approach where players had challenge matches such as destroying a car before time ran out and became the fighting game that younger gamers could play with parental approval as the violence was considerably lower.
Mortal Kombat had two successful films and Street Fighter had one that did not connect with fans which saw the series devolve into animated, cable, and direct to video releases while new games continued to arrive every few years.
Mortal Kombat would appear to have momentum as they have ridden recent game releases and animated films to a successful film relaunch and many expect “Mortal Kombat II” to perform well upon release. The footage I saw at CInemacon looked like cheesy fun as Johnny Cage has to face an enemy after admitting that his stuntman does all of his fighting on film, and he does not know what to do.
“Street Fighter” rolled out most of their cast at Cinemacon and gave us a look at some of the footage which looks to be over-the-top fun in keeping with the series.
“Mortal Kombat II” looks to give fans a gory R-rated action comedy while “Street Fighter” is giving us a PG-13 take which is in keeping with the series.
Fans of the series will likely see both films and the questions will be made if the R rating will attract or restrict audiences. In the end, while Mortal Kombat is arguably the bigger game franchise, it has a more recent and proven impact on the film side, and it will be interesting to see how the final products will be upon release.
