Players can play as one of four characters and work with other players or Bots as they work their way through missions that will challenge and delight fans with their scale and carnage.
Between missions, players can customize their loadout, look, and abilities as the right mix can be essential. I learned that while my knife and pistol were effective, my main Machine Gun was great until the clip ran dry and needed frequent reloads during swarm attacks.
This caused me to either plan a hit-and-run strategy, switch weapons frequently, or upgrade to a weapon that offered more rounds but limited my mobility.
Vehicles play an important part in the game, as using them to cover large areas of the maps helps you stay alive as long as you ensure that the vehicle is gassed and repaired for any damage you cause running over swarms.
The winch on the vehicle is great for getting out of steep and sticky situations as well as pulling open doors to supply areas in order to gear up.
An early mission had my team defending a courtyard, and we were able to set traps such as electrical barriers and load up with special weapons, such as a grenade launcher.
I played an early version of the game a few years back, so I took my time with the release version to note the improved graphics and gameplay, as well as pace myself through the missions I had already played; hence why my review of the game is only posting now. I opted to play the game in segments versus continuously, which is a nice option as you can pick up and play at any time.
The gameplay will seem familiar to some, and while at times it seemed like I was playing a variation on World War Z, there were enough new wrinkles to keep the game fun and engaging.
The missions offer horror fans some fun moments, and it remains an engaging diversion and an ideal way to pass the time with friends or other gamers you have matched with.
