Following your dream is the key aspect of the new documentary film “Mockbuster,” which is a charming look at the madness and magic of making movies. Australian Director Anthony Firth chronicles his desire to direct and how his indie films with friends got him recognition and awards, and working with some of his legends on short projects.
Despite this, Anthony works a job directing corporate videos and faces the upcoming birth of his first child while facing numerous rejections for his attempts to direct a feature.
Anthony contacts The Asylum and is amazed at how fast and easily they accept him to direct, and he travels to their office in California. The studio, known for numerous low-budget films such as “Sharknado” and various creature features, informs Anthony he will have to film a movie in six days with a budget of roughly $250,000
The film is another remake of “The Land that Time Forgot,” and despite concerns about the short production schedule, budget, and more, Anthony agrees to the project.
He soon finds himself unable to find a local Production Company willing to work with the budget and schedule and has The Asylum send over their troubleshooter to get things moving.
The first day of filming finds the cast and Anthony having to wait on costume approvals and losing a day to basically an audition.
Filming presents challenges, and despite it all, Anthony moves ahead and gets the film in, only to have to fly to the U.S. on his dime to shoot additional footage for continuity and FX reasons.
From the various actors who have appeared in numerous films for The Asylum to the people at the studio and on the set, the Documentary is a great look at facing challenges head-on and accomplishing your goals even if you have to lower your expectations accordingly.
