Tom Cruise gives a whirlwind performance as Digger Rockwell in the new satirical comedy “Digger”.
Cruise stars as a wealthy oil mogul whose money and productivity first approach has given him powerful political connections and employees who cower at his rants.
When a catastrophic situation arises, Digger and the President (John Goodman) go into damage control and the movie takes an unexpected turn that changes up the movie.
It would be difficult to go into further detail without spoiling key elements but suffice it to say the movie plays out like an expensive Art Film as it is filled with quirky scenes and characters, odd sequences and music, and elements that at time seemed overly long and self-indulgent yet worked in the end.
Cruise is manic as he rants and raves but delivers a passionate performance and has moments of calm clarity and is easy to overlook the extensive makeup that transforms him into his character.
“Digger” may be a bit quirky and Arthouse for some mainstream audiences but Cruise is to be praised for taking a bold swing at the content and he puts everything into his performance which may well earn him nominations come awards time.
The social commentary is biting and topical and the supporting cast works well amongst the chaos and Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu is able to blend the commentary with the chaos to an effective conclusion.
