With his health declining and deciding to end his life on his terms, Mitt makes a choice to die at sea and thus his family had to bury an empty coffin as his remains were never found.
In the new movie “Whalefall” Jay attempts to find some form of closure for his tormented emotions by diving to hopefully locate the remains of his father and have the closure he and the family needs.
An appearance of a Giant Squid is cause for alarm and when the large whale hunting the Squid causes Jay to be tangled with the squid and swallowed alive, his situation becomes dire. With less than an hour of air, Jay needs to find a way to stay alive and escape from a nightmare situation.
The movie balances the current crisis with several flashbacks which explains the complicated and fractured relationship between father and son as well as the deeply conflicted emotions that Jay has.
While the scenes inside the whale and underwater can at times be dark and tricky to discern, they are in keeping with the setting and the film has a much deeper than expected plotline about the complicated bond between father and son as well as expectations and finding ones way in life
I had expected a movie that was more of a survival film instead of a emotional look at a complicated relationship, yet it worked well for the film.
The final act may be a bit Hollywood for some people as certain elements of the plot at times took a leap of faith but did not distract from the tense and emotional situation that Jay found himself in.
In the end, “Whalefall” delivers an exciting, intense, and emotional journey that is worth seeing.
