Hellraiser is back, and Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival gives fans a dark, mature, and disturbing journey into the world of Hellraiser. Right from the start, the game mixes sex, nudity, self-mutilation, and more before finding your way into a nightmare come to life.
While this may seem shocking, anyone who has ever seen any of the films knows that the concepts of Pain and Pleasure are what the demonic Cenobites use to tempt and manipulate those who summon them.
There is also a cult that players have to contend with, and early in the game players will have to move through various locales, solve puzzles, obtain keycards, and such to try to escape the hellish nightmare you have entered.
The game pulls no punches, and while solving puzzles is central to aspects of the game, it is by no means the core of the game, as survival is the key, as are choices that players will have to make, which allow for different resolutions to the story.
Since the game is played from a First-Person perspective, weapons become available in time and allow for guns and melee weapons to be utilized, which can help when confronted with enemies, especially when hiding in the shadows and sneaking around is not your strength.
Thankfully, the game offers varied difficulty settings which can be adjusted in-game and does help when confronted with challenges.
Graphically, the game is brutal, bloody, and pulls no punches as it is arguably one of the most graphic and disturbing games in recent memory.
While some may say it is overkill, it is in keeping with the franchise and those looking for a new chapter in the series will likely find enough to like to make it a worthy undertaking.
