Cirque du Soliel: Ovo
The world famous Cirque du Soliel has brought their amazing show Ovo to the Phoenix area through February 23rd at the Talking Stick Arena.
The show is a colorful and amazing mix of acrobatics, whimsy, music, and showmanship that is filled with the daring and innovative routines that the company is known for.
The show follows a group of insects as they fight, love, and live their lives in a thriving environment which is as colorful and diverse as the characters that make up the show.
The show opens with a company standard of having characters walk out and into the crowds a few minutes before the main show starts. The amazing makeup and costumes look even more impressive up close and the show opened with a rousing number where a group of women juggled and balanced objects and each other using only their feet. The control and precision shown amazed the audience and underscored just how special the show they were about to see was.
The show offers comic routines between the acts. The comedy brings something for every member of the family and helps to advance the story, highlighting the characters and their motivations.
The first half of the show included a dazzling aerial act as well as an impressive mix of balance and contortion that was breathtaking to behold.
The first half ended with a high energy display that was a great variation on the trapeze routine. Instead of swinging back on forth on a suspended bar, the acrobats threw each other between various members, their arms and bodies provided the only propulsion and anchoring.
Following a short intermission, the audience was given an amazing routine that had to be seen to be believed. I have seen contortion acts in some of the company’s past shows but never have I seen anything as impressive as this as words simply cannot do justice to what we saw.
More comedy routines and amazing music followed and the show ended with a spectacle of acrobatics where a large cast combined a giant climbing wall, trampolines, and incredible gymnasts to create a unique and high-energy finale.
Ovo is a fantastic show not to be missed and is a shining example of what makes Cirque du Soliel such a unique and captivating entertainment option and one you will not want to miss.
