The conversation offers an exclusive look at the creativity, collaboration, and craftsmanship shaping the next generation of musicals.
The panel featured Bryan Carter (Orchestrator/ Music Supervisor – An Evening with Jeff Goldblum), Stephen Oremus (Music Director/ Arranger for Wicked and Executive Music Producer for Wicked: For Good), Ethan Popp (Music Supervisor, Arranger & Orchestrator – The Lost Boys, Back to the Future: The Musical), Charlie Rosen (Composer/ Orchestrator/ Conductor – The 8-Bit Big Band, Some Like It Hot), and Katie Spelman (Choreographer – The Notebook, School Spirits), and was moderated by Katharine Quinn (Founder + CEO of And That’s Showbiz).
The panel began with a conversation on collaboration and what it takes to bring stories to life. Music Director Stephen Oremus stated, “It’s important to highlight (music orchestration) as a collaboration because it’s such a collaborative art form. After developing Wicked from inception, we were in the final scene of Act One, and that was one of those moments where it was so well written as a scene and as an argument, and as a journey between two friends. Once we got on stage and added costumes and lighting and the levitation effect, I would, as the 1st Conductor of the show, feel the people behind me lean forward and just lose their minds over what they were seeing. It was the magic of theater. It was all of those elements coming together to tell the story in a really powerful and exciting way. And it’s something that I will treasure forever as this, this, iconic moment on the first Broadway show I ever conducted.”
Composer/ Orchestrator/ Conductor Charlie Rosen jumped into the conversation, saying, “The most successful Broadway shows are the ones where everyone, across every discipline, all share the same idea about what the aesthetic and story of the show is. Then I use an instrument to convey emotion, or I use this time period to convey feeling. It’s the same answer, but with an arsenal and a vocabulary of musical textures and ideas to make sure that you’re really enhancing the storytelling on stage, but through instruments and music and composing.”
“There’s nothing better than the moment when you see all the pieces come together and you realize that it all works,” added Music Supervisor Ethan Popp. “For me, that was towards the end of Act One (of The Lost Boys) when, after Michael’s initiation into vampirism, he’s there floating. The first time I saw that on stage, I thought, this is exactly why we do this. Even in the midst of working 100 hours a week, utterly exhausted, you still get goosebumps.”
