Deep Water Is A Thrilling Popcorn Movie With Sharks

The new thriller “Deep Water” Sees Aaron Eckhart as an airline First Officer with some heavy baggage. He lost his career in the military when he struck another officer and various issues have kept him from becoming an airline, Captain. He is avoiding his home due to a sick child and eagerly accepts overseas flights to keep him away from home and having to face difficulties.

The airline Captain (Ben Kingsley) attempts to console and motivate his First Officer and tells him that he should be sitting in the Captains chair and he will face the challenges in his life versus running from them.

Their flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai has a mix of individuals ranging from an elderly woman on the way to see her Granddaughter, a newly married couple with children, an e-Sports team from China, an American sports team, and a belligerent and annoying passenger.

When a fire breaks out and cannot be contained; the plane is forced to crash into the ocean roughly 100 miles from Guam. The spectacular and devasting crash claims the lives of many of the passengers and crew, but the real danger awaits.

As the plane segments and survivors’ content with flooding, collapsing reefs, and their plight, they soon have to content with Mako sharks which turn the crash site into a feeding zone.

While the premise of stranded individuals being terrorized by sharks is not new, Director Renny Harlin taps into his “Deep Blue Sea” past and provides and engaging and tense thriller that was better than advertised. While questions like how are their cell phones working after being in the sea and other aspects have to be suspended in order to make the film work, the characters through a bit stock, hold your interest enough that makes the attacks thrilling even if you do not have a full investment in their survival.

The ending does get a bit over-the top but as a Popcorn Movie it was very entertaining and one of the more enjoyable shark films in recent memory.
