In “Ice Cream Man”, audiences are introduced to an idyllic summer town where Baseball games and the corner store are par for the course. To this ideal settings comes an Ice Cream truck with tempting treats with bizarre names that’s are eagerly consumed by the children of the town.
Sadly one local boy is not able to enjoy the treats due to an issue with Lactose and is mocked by his peers over this and other factors.
That evening a change takes place in the children as with mouths stained from the frozen treats, they brutally and sadistically dispatch their parents and in time, any adult that they encounter.
A small group of children who have avoided the Ice Cream soon become the only line of defense and must navigate a town gone insane in order to find the reason for the living nightmare and find a way to stop it.
Roth has a small part in the film as well and seems to relish the extreme gore where everything for a visceral decorated playground and school become the norm with blood, gore, sinew, organs, and more all tossed in for good measure.
The approach is not one to gross out but to have an over-the-top commentary where the excess is so abundant that it is sure to get a mix of laughs and shrieks from viewers. The storyline is very basic even by Horror film standards but it does deliver some genre entertainment that does set up a possible franchise. While It lacks the twists and turns of “Thanksgiving” and the plot elements of “Cabin Fever” and “Hostel”, “Ice Cream Man” is retro horror that is linear and unapologetic in it’s excess/
