Marvel Studios has brought their version of The Fantastic Four to audiences who had longed for the popular characters to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Fantastic Four: First Steps”.
The movie avoids an original story and brings audiences up to speed with a montage of clips showing their past battles and history as they are honored for their heroic works by a loving media and public.
Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), find that their family is about to grow which brings joy to them and Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss- Bachrach).
Reed is concerned about their unborn child due to both parents exposure to the rays that granted them powers and his socially awkward persona is not convinced no matter how many tests he conducts.
Their joy is interrupted by the arrival of a Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), who informs them that Earth is to be consumed by Galactus (Ralph Ineson.
The team race to space to confront Galactus in an effort to stop him and the resulting conflict presents the team with an impossible choice.
Unwilling to accept the terms despite public outcry; the team must devise a way to save the planet before Galactus arrives.
The movie takes some time getting to the action as the characters and plot are established. The action is satisfying without being excessive and does a great job establishing what the characters offer and how they are formidable when working as a team.
The retro setting of the movie is a nice variation and the strong cast is supported well by an effective story that serves to introduce the characters into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are two bonus scenes with the first getting gasps from people in our screening and paves the way for “Avengers: Doomsday” and the chemistry between the cast perfectly captures their loving yet dysfunctional dynamic that that established them as family in the comics.
